The segues while people are caught up on what happened to others are a bit too obvious and a bit too often used. Very little time is spent on describing the surroundings, and for some it might be a bit too little. It is a perfect break from heavy-duty high fantasy or sci-fi books that require a lot of focus, and it is incredibly entertaining as well. In fact, the book would be perfect for a movie adaptation. ![]() While the landscape is beautifully portrayed and deftly mined for subtext and symbolism, the novel can’t overcome its central contradiction. When Gemma’s escape attempts end in near death, Ty rescues her, returning her to captivity, using such handy teachable moments to instruct her on outback ecology. Abandoned child turned wasted drifter and stalker, Ty is now an expert survivalist, bent on teaching his abductee admiration and respect for the harsh world in which he’s imprisoned her. Her captor, Ty, in his late 20s, is a less-successful creation. ![]() Privileged Gemma, 16, is sympathetic and believable. ![]() From its compelling opening, the novel delivers taut suspense and a riveting plot in a haunting setting. In particular, I found the sections on the invention of writing and the domestication of food fascinating, as these inventions are fundamental to our civilisation yet I had not thought much about these, let alone studied them before. It made me realise history was so much more than the Tudors and WWII! Also, Jared Diamond makes the history, even from thousands of years ago, seem relevant to the present day, giving it extra interest. I found these so interesting as these topics are so different to what I studied in school. This book also introduced me to some different periods and topics of history I had never studied before, such as the invention of writing, the domestication of food products and the history of Australia and Africa. Particularly useful is the section “Around the world in five chapters” where each chapter has a history of a section of the world, especially useful to get an overview of whichever period you want to read more about. It also makes the book interesting as it doesn’t dwell too much on any one period so it never gets boring. This great range of history is useful in finding out what sort of history, or even another discipline, you are interested in. Guns, Germs and Steel was one of the first history books I read that I actually enjoyed! This book gives a global history over the last 13,000 years, so after reading it you gain a broad understanding across a lot of history. ![]() ![]() Such fascinating main characters and character development! The writing style and the plot managed to draw me in right from the start and the different storylines only help adding to the initial suspense. And my instincts were right, because this psychological thriller by Lisa Jewell has literally blown me away. However, something about the blurb of I Found You instantly caught my attention and had me wonder about the story behind the main characters. Let’s face it, the whole amnesia angle has been used a lot lately in psychological thrillers and this element on its own isn’t all that original anymore.
